The Northland utility could be in the mix to play Wales in Hamilton on Saturday.
He has been called in to cover injuries to fullback Israel Dagg (concussion) and centre Conrad Smith (eye) who were injured in the All Blacks 42-9 win in the opening test win over Wales in Dunedin last weekend.
Neither will be available this weekend.
''Israel is making good progress from his concussion but still has mild symptoms so won’t be available this weekend while Conrad was reviewed by a specialist at Waikato Hospital (Monday) and, while his eye is settling well, he too won’t be available to play this weekend,'' All Blacks Doctor Deb Robinson said.
It’s likely the All Blacks will use Richard Kahui at centre and Cory Jane at fullback to cover the gaps in the starting XV.
Ranger looms as a candidate for the bench.
The 23–year–old Ranger trained with the All Blacks in the leadup to their opening test against Ireland.
He was then released to play for the New Zealand Barbarians against New Zealand Maori earlier this month.
The All Blacks team will be named later today.
